Thumbs up Corrie's Betty Not Quiting The Street

Corrie chiefs have denied reports that Street legend Betty Driver is ready to quit the soap after an incredible 41 years.

It follows suggestions that the Rovers Return's queen of the hotpot is preparing to hang up her apron.

The star, who plays barmaid Betty Williams, is Coronation Street's oldest cast member and will celebrate her 90th birthday in 10 days. (MAY20)

But a spokesman for the show denied she is preparing to walk out on Weatherfield.

He said: “It's pure speculation. Betty is still on the show and continues to be a much-loved actress and much-loved character.

“We fully intend her to be part of this year's 50th anniversary celebrations.”

Actress Betty joined the soap as school dinner lady Betty Turpin in 1969 after originally auditioning for the role of Hilda Ogden.

She celebrated her on-screen 90th birthday in February.

Betty, who lives in Altrincham, and is godmother to co-star William Roache’s son, William Junior, was awarded the MBE in 2000.

She began her showbiz career at the age of 10 – spurred on by a star-struck mother – and later became a successful recording artist before landing parts in a string of films.
