Ultimately Josie has low self esteem, which leads her to eat too much. She probably drinks far too much as well if indecently exposing herself to a monk in Thailand was alcohol related and not a complete inability to comprehend social norms.
Not having her own esteem she tried to get esteem from others (Maslow: hierarchy of needs) someone to curry favour with them by demanding an offering for them from an inoocent party.
Josie is not to be pitied for her self esteem issues. She needs to learn to develop her self image from positive actions and behaviour.
