Maybe the word of God leaves him feeling euphoric - or perhaps he has a psychosomatic reaction which leaves him feeling genuinely intoxicated. Who knows? And why does it matter all that much? Dave's a legend.
This constant attack on his faith is getting a bit old now – and if it's the only thing you can fault him for he's not doing too badly.
