My interpretation of when he says "God loves them" about "homosexuals" is basically that he believes they are sinners but that God can make them see the error of his ways if they allow themselves to fall for the "love of god" bull****.

I don't think he is ashamed, I think its because he can't actually back up the **** that he believes so he doesnt even want talk about it.
