Well I can see why some people would see it like that but he went to the DR before the new HMs came in. He said in the DR that he doesn't see her like that. But he went back into her bed. He was a bit shaken up that she'd grabbed his "widger"....I don't think he knew what to do.
Dave told JJ he was joking about them being popular on the outside, he was winding JJ up.
I believe he genuinely cares for her.
