Ok how about this for a theory:
(1) Mario has a boyfriend. (No surprises so far).
(2) The BF is a big,
very big, name in the music or entertainment industry. (Still no surprises).

The BF has hitherto been regarded as totally straight and is indeed adored and lusted after by female fans the world over.
