Sam was upset because he thought John James was a friend and the person he felt closest to in the house. In their convo in the nest this morning Sam said "You didn't add to the conversation, you were leading it".

Sam is perfectly able to hold his own in a face to face, argument or banter, but was shocked to hear what was being said behind his back.
