I really doubt Sam reads message boards.

And he's not being fake, either - he's not being one dimensional, that's all. People think that when people show another side to themselves then they're being fake, but people's personalities aren't that simple, are they? If you're someone who manages to behave in the exact same way every day, then you'd be a dull and predictable person. Having multiple parts to your personality is normal, not 'fake'.
