Yup.

In a weird way all of this reminds me of psychics/fortune readers and such.

You pay them, generally knowing it is false...but can you demand your money back and claim it is a con when your future doesnt turn out to be as bright as they said it was going to be? Of course not. You knew at the time that it was chance to be a load of BS
