Did you follow Sky's report when they announced his victory? They used the phrase
union stooge so many times it was clear their intention was to firmly plant this notion in viewers' minds. And for many people who don't closely follow politics and didn't see their game, I'm sure they suceeded in poisoning people against him before he even got started.
