I consider someone to have their head 'split open' as just that, but it was probably a small wound that wouldn't stop bleeding.
I'm not saying he'll be dragged through the courts and locked up for three years, but the police might just have to get involved to document it etc - or the school called them. I don't know exactly how it all works, but I would expect the police to be involved if an ambulance had to come to the school.
