Infractions match the severity of the rule breaks and if the poster is a repeat offender. So if you insulted someone you might get a warning or one point if you haven't had any other infractions but if you've got other infractions the points tend to be higher. Typically the amount of points for repeatedly insulting people is 3 although we will give more if that doesn't do the trick for example.
What people don't understand most of the time is that with the infraction system it's down to the poster, the more the play up the more severe the infractions and bans but if they can learn from the rule breaks and behave then they can get a clean slate eventually as all infractions have a set time limit.
We only tend to outright ban multiple accounts or spambots outright these days, all the temp bans are down to the infraction system.
