Ghost Stories for Halloween
It was a cold foggy night, when a man alighted from a train and pulled his coat closer around him. It was nearly midnight and for some reason the man felt a twinge of unease as he realised he was alone on the platform. He thought longingly of his bed as he quickened his pace to the exit and exhaled sharply as he emerged out on to the street. There was no-one else around but he had the distinct sensation that he was being watched.
His flat was nearby, just a couple of minutes walk away, and the man found himself almost running, suddenly gripped by a strange clammy sense of fear. He was too afraid to turn around, convinced he would find himself face to face with someone or someTHING dreadful. As he ran, he fumbled for his keys and with a gasp of relief, he connected the right key in the lock straight away, turned it in one quick twist of the wrist, and leapt into his hallway. He slammed the door shut behind him, almost crying with fear, and double locked his door.
Sighing with relief he hung his coat and hat on the hook, and crumpled onto his sofa, almost laughing at himself for having been so scared. It was at that moment he heard something that filled his heart with dread - a voice whispered clearly but menacingly "At last we're alone".
The End
Inspired by:
"Like one who, on a lonely road,
Doth walk in fear and dread,
And, having once turned round, walks on,
And turns no more his head;
Because he knows a frightful fiend
Doth close behind him tread."
(Samuel Taylor Coleridge - The Ancient Mariner)
