Mario is consumed with envy, he was jealous of any attention the others got, and it would send him into sulks, he was jealous of Ben having other friends and wanted to keep Ben all to himself, his '' shielding'' of Ben was just a type of control which he needed to have in order to keep him to himself.
He literally could not bear it when Ben was given the stand up, fake shirt for fake person was his comment, this went on until the Ben day when all of a sudden Mario started to talk to Ben again, only because most of the others were having a go at Ben and Mario thought once again Ben was out of favour and he could get back control, he is a sad delusional sleazebag.
