A publicity stunt on the part of the ruling military junta, to make them look democratic. It done from a position of power, the ruler junta have consolidated their power for the next few years having just won a sham election.

She will probably be re-arrested as soon as she starts openly criticising them on a public stage.

They still havent lifted the ban on foreign correspondents from certain media groups being allowed into and reporting from the country. Nor have they shown any indication of releasing the other 2,100 political prisoners, who funnily enough consist mainly of political opposition to the junta and campaigners for democracy.

While we can all hope the military rulers will open dialogues with Ms Suu Kyi's and other opposition parties to bring about democratic change, I cant see it happening anytime soon.
