So in such a situation, how could Simon spin it into a positive and will it signal the end of the show?

I actually hope he wins. Firstly so Louis has another winning act and secondly to see Simon & Cheryl's faces. It would be one of those epic TV gold moments where you know its going to go down in history, but would also signal X Factor becoming a victim of its own success.
