Seriously though I think it's when an artist who is clearly capable of better starts churning out a bunch of rubbish after a handful of good or even brilliant records at the beginning of their career. This is mostly to do with either fame going to the artist's head or an effort to appease mainstream simpletons. Although usually restricted to popular genres such as rock (Muse, Leonard Cohen, Radiohead) and hip hop (LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Q-Tip), one rare example of this in classical music would be Philip Glass.

No matter that they act like senile 12-year-olds on the Today programme website - smoking illegal fags to look tough and cool. No matter that Amis coins truly abominable terms like 'the age of horrorism' and when criticised tells people to 'fuck off'. Surely we all chuckle at the strenuous ennui of his salon drawl. Didn't he once accidentally sneer his face off?
