Chav is from the Romany word "Chavi" for child (more specifically boy) recorded from as early as the mid 19th century, and was also used by gypsies as a derogatory term towards an adult. The acronym CHAV "Council House And Violent" or "Cheltenham Average" has been coined relatively recently and was first applied to stereotype your average street corner hoodie, but is now used in a wider sense to stereotype a certain class of people the Americans would call "white trash".

The term "Pikey" is also derived from the Kentish dialect word for gypsy, in turn derived from "turnpike" meaning one who travels the roads.

The term "scally" is thought to originate from the word "scallywag" meaning a rascal or villain, and is usually applied to those believed to be involved in criminal activity of some sort.
