You can hate her pretentiousness, you can hate her music, you can hate her style and her image, but you can't really say she's not an artist. She writes, she plays, she performs, she tries to shock and let's be honest: it works. Her pop music is the best written in years.
I hate to use phrases like "haters gonna hate" but I really can't understand why people are against her so viciously. As for the Madonna thing...Madonna's hardly talented. Sure, she's way more important as a revolutionary figure, but come on. Stop attacking what's popular just because she isn't any more.

I agree on your first paragraph and also think it answers the second one. People hate her because - though there
may be a bit of substance - a lot of people recognize that it is at the end of the day a case style over substance. Which is fine for pop. But it's the utterly blatant way she does it I suppose. Wearing outlandish outfits and posing rigor mortis in a way that is guaranteed to get her plastered in the sig and avatars of people who value those traits everywhere a day after the photoshoot because it 'just looks cool'.
She is no doubt a master at it. Probably one of the most effective cases of cult of image since our zany hipster western interpretation of Jesus Christ.
