Loads of words and phrases are in everyday use, and people don't mean them literally. What about when someone says "Those shoes are to die for?" for example. Obviously nobody would really want to die for a pair of shoes! When people say "I hate it when..." they don't usually mean they hate it, they mean it annoys them. When people say, "I love your hair" they don't actually love that person's hair do they? It's just a phrase.
