When Cheryl Cole was 11 years old, something happened that changed her life for ever: her father left home and didn’t come back.
Did she blame herself for her father’s departure and, if so, has she been desperately seeking the approval of the men in her life (including Simon Cowell) ever since? If that’s the case, perhaps it might go some way to explaining why, at 28, drop-dead beautiful and a multi-millionairess in her own right, she is scurrying back to her rat of a former husband, footballer Ashley Cole. So much for female empowerment.

Cheryl will give her legions of young female fans an awful example of how to deal with men if she takes Ashley back. Perhaps to despair at her willingness to go back to Ashley is to invest her with more common sense than she actually possesses.

As they say on The X Factor, Cheryl had the perfect ‘journey’. She was living her dream and thereby offering a route to others to escape the cycle of dysfunctional, abusive families, broken homes and lost hopes. Yet now she is offering those millions of young female fans the worst possible example of how to deal with men. But Cheryl appears to have such low self-esteem that she’s convinced she doesn’t deserve any better than Ashley Cole, a tramp of a man.

Everyone is talking about Cheryl and Ashley again. He’s promised her the world — and Cheryl has fallen for it. Stupid, stupid girl. It will end only in heartbreak.
