Coroner Dr Fiona Wilcox ruled she committed suicide while the balance of her mind was disturbed. Heartbroken Mr Phillips, 87, who starred in the Carry On films, did not attend the inquest today at Westminster magistrates' court.

In a statement read to the court he said he was in his sitting room on April 11 when he heard a scream and looked out of the window. "Angela was at the bottom of the stairs lying prostrate," he said. "She was generally in a shocking state."

His wife was covered in blood and acid and he and a neighbour doused her with water and towels as she lay making inaudible noises.

The neighbour, Mahmood Asmar, first found Ms Scoular after hearing her crying for help. Ms Scoular had drunk the industrial strength drain cleaner, which she found in the kitchen cupboard, before running from her house, pouring it over herself and falling down the steps.

She was rushed to hospital but died from burns to 40 per cent of her body, fractures as a result of her fall and damage to her lungs and oesophagus from drinking the acid.
