I think it only happens if you dye it lighter than your natural colour, I'm not 100% sure though. I'd imagine that if you dye it darker, like you have, the colour might just fade or something.
I'm not sure about how long you should leave it. I'd have thought you'd be fine after a couple of days. Just don't go swimming on the same day you dyed it
