As for Aaron, he actually is being totally himself - warts and all. He isn't afraid to show his feelings, good or bad, and he sticks up for his principles. He doesn't need to be part of someone's gang to big himself up or give him self esteem. He says to the viewers "this is me, like it or not" and he trusts the viewers to understand and be on his side - and guess what? A hell of a lot of us are.
