I don't see what is wrong with him avoiding confrontation... he reminds me of my OH when he does that, my OH likes to get time alone to calm down or think etc and avoid it escalating... I think it is better to do that, and than to react... or, like at the dinner table, be goaded into a fight which Tom was clearly trying to do.
