This is a tricky question. On one hand, 50 K for a couple of months of loitering is a lot of money in comparison to what ordinary people earn. On the other hand, the housemates have to be able to leave their lives (and jobs etc.) for months, so not a lot of people are able to do that (Plus there's a chance that the publicity that follows the person afterwards is not positive). I suppose that's one of the reasons the housemates are quite young. They haven't yet build up proper lives, so they'll be able to jump in. So maybe bigger prize money would tempt other types of people to try out for BB. However, it's still BB that's choosing the housemates and it has everything to do with what kind of outcome they have in mind. I mean even though they'd say that it doesn't matter to them who wins the show, they still have think about the probable house dynamics before hand in order to have a clue what the show will be like. After so many years of BB, I think the applicants are mostly fame hungry (some luckily are also after the experience) and they all try to get in by being controversial, which they usually are not in real life nor in the house.
