If anything they did it to make themselves look 'good'. How can it make Aaron look 'bad'? If he took it in good spirit and was pleased for Alex/Tom it would make him equally look 'good'. But either way its clear hes just conscious of the money and its nothing to do with the gifts, he thinks hes gonna win and the greed is taking over him.
