I have noticed (grossness aside...as noone else can be blamed for that) that its usually people associated with jay that make him look bad. He was an absolute dick when around Anton. Anton left and Jay became more likeable. And now Louise is making him look bad over this whole gift thing...which I dont think Jay even wanted to do. I think he gave in when she went on about it...he certainly did not seem happy about it. Then its Louise that has kept mentioning the money (thus making aarons point about it being for the cameras alone stick out a lot more) and bringing it up constantly...and then she winds him up so much ranting on that he goes and snaps.
