First of all not everyone believes in transgender for various reasons eg religion/ culture/ science. That you can't actually change your assigned birth gender any more than you can change your race, so to a lot of people the likes of Lauren Harries is just a bitchy gay man who's had a vagina installed.
When I meet transgendered people I will always treat them in the way they want to be treated, so if I met Lauren I'd regard her to her face as being a woman. But in private I will see her as a bloke, but never let this be known to her out of respect for what she wants. To be honest I used to believe in transgenderism, and supported it now I am cynical and think people just change gender as they can't hack being in their birth gender. What I think in private is up to me and I refuse to tow the PC-line, but again I would never let on to a transgendered person as they should never be made to feel uncomfortable. An effeminate man deciding he would make a better woman as he's never going to live up to the ideal of the macho man. Rather than changing gender, I would rather society accepted that some men are effeminate and some women are butch. There's a who spectrum of people. You don't have to be a woman to be feminine and not all women are feminine anyway.
For me now gender isn't something you can actively participate in changing - it's given to you when you are born (unless you are inter-sexual). If you can change your gender then you can change your race and ethnicity! And there is growing number of transgender people who are changing back to their birth gender 'oh I am bored of being a female now, I now want to be a bloke again'

Why don't we have men who want to become butch women? Why are all male to female transgenders wanting to be frilly, girly and feminine? I grew up pa girl who liked playing football and playing with action men, but it didn't make me want to be a boy. Why aren't there men who want to be tomboys as tomboys are still female. I am actually insulted when transgendered women say 'I always wanted to be a girl as I liked playing with dolls and wearing pink' Erm, I didn't.
And even those that do accept transgenderism/ transsexualism etc see it as part of the LGBT spectrum even though most male - to - female transgender women will be women who fancy men ie straight women.
