Role of the Armed Forces is to deploy at the governments decision.
Not only for war but also in support of Civilian Powers in times of emergencies and need.
You know things like food distribution filling sandbags for flood measures and all those other good jobs.
Besides most of the ones you will see on the streets wont be armed.
If you kept your eyes open you would see they are the stewarding force at wimbledon etc
