Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 has been officially announced by Sega.
The upcoming sequel will feature the rebirth of Metal Sonic as the game's primary villain and see the return of Tails as Sonic's sidekick.
In an interview with Gamespot, Digital Brand manager Ken Balough also revealed that the latest episode will feature a brand new graphics and physics engine based on fan feedback.
Speaking about the game's "massive changes", Balough said that Sonic would no longer stick to walls or uncurl from his ball form when jumping out from a hill.
The title will be released in 2012 on the Xbox 360 (XBLA), PlayStation 3 (PSN), Windows Phone 7, iOS and Android devices.
No mention was made of whether the game will follow its predecessor and be released on the Nintendo Wii.
