If only Denise had heeded your advice, she would have stopped badgering Michael to have a drink just to make herself feel better about falling off the wagon on a daily basis. Michael is a recovering alcoholic and removes himself from the excessive boozing for a reason. Denise is an old soak who is in denial about her alcohol problem and truly believes she can "handle" it when she blatantly can't. Therein lies a lot of the conflict.
