I have chatted with Mormon missionaries and really like a lot of what they do, they are very strong on family bonds and connection so although I myself don't agree with converting the dead, I can accept they would do it in repsonse to a desire from a new convert.

I hold Christian values myself but equally like you I dislike organized religions, however, Christian faith instructs that the dead are elsewhere,not gone completely.
