A major mistake here is taking this guy at his word. He was never in danger of becoming a statistic. His day in the warehouse, came as part of a management scheme to show the bosses what their peasant staff do on a daily basis. It does seem a little like that. Why else would he refer to a 'day' in the warehouse and not a few years or at the very least months.
