I'd say that all things being equal: the accusation is as equally damaging in all manner of ways.

Not having been raped, or accused myself - I can't answer on a personal level but I know a man who was wrongfully accused and I know of a female friend who was raped - and both still have never recovered fully - but the effects on the man were far wider reaching - with far less sympathy for him: he was engaged to be married at the time. These people were 21 and 16. The guy tried to take his own life. The woman didn't. So who knows unless we're in that positon on a personal level.
