Gilligan was the first mate on the S. S. Minnow when, during a storm, he threw an anchor overboard without the line attached, which left the boat shipwrecked with all aboard. He is constantly ending up in accidents with his friend, the Skipper, annoying him with his bumbling antics which ruin escape attempts. He often interjects discussions with pointless anecdotes about his childhood or with seemingly useless advice, but always seems to be helpful in the end. Despite his bumbling nature, Gilligan has an innate innocence of character that causes the others to forgive his mistakes.
