I don't think it's to harsh, because of course he could use that to his advantage. However people shouldn't feel sorry for him because that actually makes out that he is different enough to warrant sympathy. When in actual fact he's just a normal human being, who has changed his gender. It happens to often nowadays it's not particularly strange.
I think it's too early to judge whether he is using it to his advantage though, he could just want it out in the open early so as to not have to worry about it later in the months to come. And if he does.. Then we'll all just kick him out!
