I think lostalex has it right in this case. People are very unforgiving about Caroline for a number of reasons, which include the fact she's not the kind of girl who spends hours in front of the mirror and jumping around in outfits that show her arse. And she's not the prettiest girl in the house, so that's a massive black mark against her. Also, she's posh. Some people dislike the fact that she comes from a privileged background and assume that her lack of ambition is to do with the fact her family has money, but I know plenty of people with no money who have no ambition.
