You seem to be as intelligent as Caroline herself. You seem to be forgetting that he's being watched by the public, I'm sure that he's aware that he's justifying his own actions not only to the house but to the viewers and there's nothing wrong with that.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with what he did. It took him the better part of a minute to explain himself, that's hardly "going on" and nobody told him to stop. If they were too immature to sit and listen to the man justify himself AFTER THEY COMPLAINED (thus virtually requesting as much from him) then they could have simply left the room.
