I don't think you're that wrong to generalize because it's very common to do that all over the place.
I'm in the US and live in Chicago, and I can say people in different parts of the country are perceived differently. Having been to Hawaii a few times, I have to learn to let my guard down because people are generally nicer and more welcoming. Not saying that there are a lot of bad people in Chicago or there are not bad people in Hawaii, but people from different areas behave differently - especially when you compare those from large cities versus small towns.
