Adam is not Connor.....could easily have shut her down and made her look stupid i n front of everyone (remember Arron and the lights), but he doesn't 'pick' on women just to look tough and if you listen to the video he was telling Luke he was planning on confronting her before Lydia stepped in......now they are using it to she if Lydia is really to be trusted.
