If they only used people who signed up for it then that would be okay, but they don't, they use random innocent people's computers in their attacks.
It has and still does happen so yes you have a point they are trying to move away from the botnets of old and make a botnet of their own that consists of willing participants you cant fault the effort. there is a 4 percent chance you are part of a chinese led conficker botnet anyway.
