I agree with you, when the character Bet Lynch was created as a member of Coronation St, although there would be ideas of how she could turn out was going to very much depend on the actress playing her.
In effect Bet Lynch is really likely Julie Goodyear, just as Rita,(called Tanner) is really the actress playing her, they bring their own traits likely into the characters they play at times.
If they play the character for a long period as Julie has Bet, then more and more of their own personality must even more form the character they are playing, when it is a fictitious person.
No matter what she plays now, Jean Alexander, for instance will always to most people be Hilda Ogden and Julie is likely to always be Bet Lynch, especially since the character hasn't been killed off in Corrie yet too.
The world of acting is an odd one and people do over time likely turn the characters into people more like themselves, I doubt Julie Goodyear has any identity problem as to being Bet or Julie, to her and to a great many people for the time she has portrayed her, the 2 are likely the same anyway as to personality in the main.
(I was just reading an old cast list from an old TV times for Corrie and was amused at Bet lynch being payed by Julie
Goodyear, Annie Walker being played by Doris
Speed and Betty Turpin being played by Betty
Driver,all vehicle related surnames.)
After over 50 years Corrie is an amazing success as to a series/soap,the characters really do come to mean quite a bit I have found to the avid followers of the soap, fans of Corrie would likely rarely if ever call Julie Goodyear, Julie, they would call her Bet,even if they saw her in person.
Most people I hear in the supermarket I go to are on about Bet Lynch being on Big Brother, not even saying the name Julie Goodyear.
I have a feeling Julie will guess and even know that is expected, she isn't likely disappointing many in that at all. I hope she keeps doing all she is doing and full credit to her from me for that.
