the welsh people Ive known here since moving to wales do not support independence, I would say its at least 70% against from the people Ive met. the welsh are fiercely patriotic, but are ultimately a pacifist people. I met a man called gwynfor evans, years ago. Id never heard of him when living in england. but in Wales he was a demi God. This man , apart from a very successful business career, formed plaed cymru, after the uk parliament had flooded a town called treweryn in mid wales in around 1960. they drowned everything the animals, the schools,m the churches, everyone was kicked out and thousands were booted out, simply to make another reservoir for liverpool
no consultation nothing, liverpool was bigger. gwynfor evans told me, this had happened to 15 different welsh towns in the last 100 years. hence why wales has enormous reservoirs everywhere and is underpopulated. so he formed his welsh political party. he won the election and was driven to westminster by every man woman and child from his local village. a few years later, he negotiated with maggie thatcher, before she came to power, that wales would get 1 welsh language tv station. she agreed. but when she came to power she renaged and tried to stop it. so he went on a hunger strike. he decried any man who used violence, he was a life long pacifist. several months later, thatcher relented and allowed the channel.
25 years later the channel is going strong, the welsh language has grown significantly, its taught in every single school and approx 27% of the population speak welsh, its also spoken by the thousands of expats in the usa, patagona/argentina, canada, australia, england, new zealand etc
the numbers are growing rapidly, now that its in the schools at every level and on tv and radio
Ive even learnt a few words meself, bore dda, dda iawn, prynhawn dda,
now lets all have a cwtch
now theres lovely
I feel very strong along this language as its the first british language and is similar to cornish too.
for centuries the monarchies wanted to wipe it out, well im delighted its survived. hopefully in future it can survive and thrive by itself and not so much with government funding. i hihgly recommend anyone who loves music and language to listen any any welsh choir, myfanwy is my fave
