Some of them did complain - the trouble is, back in those days, the police were (mostly) a rule unto themselves and corrupt into the bargain - "duty bound" was a phrase long passed into oblivion along with "Dixon of Dock Green" and "fair cop, guv" ..... freemasonry and funny handshakes were the order of the day - "fit-ups" were standard procedure to reduce crime-rates .....
