Josy explained that the 'magic if' could be seen as the actor's starting point and that the given circumstances were the following step. She felt that a general outline for the life of the character was important and she pointed out that it was necessary for the actor to truly believe in the possibilities of such a life.

The actor would then become so accustomed to it that they would be able to feel close to it. Josy suggested that rather than trying to achieve certain emotions, the actor should direct attention to the given circumstances since they are always in reach. She believed that there was a chance that sincere emotions would spontaneously grow if the actor were sufficiently familiar with the given circumstances of their role.

The 'magic if' is asking oneself 'what would I do if I was in the same situation?' or 'what if that happened to me?' How would you feel and how would you react?
