I think Brad Pitt's character is supposed to be based on the character of the narrator in the World War Z book. The story of the book is set out like a report/interview - the narrator is like a UN type, who has been commissioned to gather data for a report, and he gets told that the human aspect of what he found isn't suitable for the report but that he should publish it as a book - so he does. All of that's in like the prologue of the book, and then after that it's a series of interviews with different characters, like soldiers from around the world, survivors etc, showing their experiences, and then is also a commentary on what would happen if the world as we know it collapsed and had to rebuild itself, and like Tibet ends up being a free country and has the world's largest population IIRC, Cuba is the leading economic power etc. It's a great book. Anyway, the character of the narrator isn't at all developed, he just asks questions of the other characters and you get lots of background about them. It's surprising they've chosen to build a film out of the book in this way, which is why I don't even consider it to be an adaptation.
