EastEnders has been pretty average since the end of 2007 (after the Christmas Day episode) but I agree that these past two years have been particularly bad. The last time there was any real buzz around the show was around early 2010 with all the Archie stuff - people have just dropped off since the live (unsurprisingly) to what we have now.
Edit - only 6.8 million tuned into EE on Friday (as opposed to Emmerdale's 7.4m and Corrie's 8.8m). Says something about the general conscientious on the show right now.
