Kim Jong il knew how to play the game of brinkmanship with the west in order to extract gains or reduce sanctions. Their shows of strength were carefully timed for maximum propaganda effect.

I just hope the new leader Kim Jong un doesn't overplay his hand or miscalculate as the consequences could be a disaster for the Korean Peninsula and the wider region.

It's time I think for North Korea to have their glasnost moment time to sit down with all global powers incl the US and try to agree meaningful change and a positive way forward one which could ultimately lead to reunification like Germany in the late 80s early 90s. Their current situation benefits no one and like all countries that imprison their population social unrest will eventually forment and grow into serious revolt. So eventually the leaders will have no choice but to modernise and engage with the rest of the world.

To keep spending more and more of the Countries resources on the Military is crazy, eventually this very military will develop factions and I wouldn't be surprised if there is some form of coup or revolt which lights the spark that would ultimately lead to real change in North Korea.

The alternative is too ghastly to even contemplate...!!!
