The average person could not kill another in cold blood, I think a person can easily be pushed to do so in defense of themselves or someone else or if they're driven by grief or despair but it'd take someone who isn't quite right to kill someone in cold blood for no reason.
Rape is a different kettle of fish entirely, it takes a sick mind to willingly inflict that on another individual.
